The National Peace Committee, through its Secretariat, The Kukah Centre, convened key stakeholders to present the Annotated Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 General Elections. The engagement was supported by the European Union under its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU–SDGN) programme.
Participants included the Independent National Electoral Commission, service chiefs and heads of security agencies, political party leaders, civil society representatives and members of the Committee.
Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, represented by Bishop Matthew Kukah, noted that the Annotated Peace Accord strengthens preventive engagement and provides clearer guidance to stakeholders amid political tension, misinformation and security concerns.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to credible elections, highlighting public trust deficit and voter apathy as critical challenges, and called for collective support in strengthening confidence in the electoral process.
Security agencies outlined predictive and analytic approaches to risk management, while stakeholders underscored the need for sustained coordination as the country advances towards 2027.
The Committee reiterated that safeguarding democracy is a shared responsibility, and that credible outcomes depend on institutions, political actors and citizens alike
