Ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo State this Saturday, European Union-funded Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) project, in collaboration with TAF Africa, , has commenced the training of election observers with a focus on ensuring the inclusivity of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the electoral process. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the accessibility and fairness of the elections for all citizens, particularly PWDs, who often face significant barriers in exercising their right to vote.
The training sessions, held in Edo State, equip observers with the skills and knowledge necessary to monitor election processes with a lens of inclusivity and accessibility. Participants are trained on the deployment of assistive technologies, the identification of access challenges at polling stations, and the evaluation of voter experiences, especially for PWDs. The initiative ensures that election observers understand the legal frameworks, such as the Disability Act, and are well-prepared to ensure these laws are upheld during the election.
In addition to this, a TAF election Situation room will be set-up where a Mid-day Situational Report will be conducted during election day to provide real-time assessments of the challenges faced by PWDs at the polls. This will highlight any barriers encountered and recommend immediate interventions to improve the voting process throughout the day. The effort underscores the commitment of both TAF Africa and EU-SDGN to enhance participation and inclusion, ensuring that no group is left behind in the democratic process.
The collaboration is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system by promoting transparency, inclusivity, and equal participation for all, regardless of physical ability. With the gubernatorial election in Edo State fast approaching, this initiative serves as a critical step toward fostering a more inclusive democracy, reinforcing the rights of PWDs, and ensuring their voices are heard in governance.
