The European Union, through its EU-SDGN (Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria) programme, backed a significant political party summit aimed at fostering inclusion. The event brought together stakeholders from various political parties to discuss the inclusion of women, youths, and persons with disabilities in political activities. This summit aimed to address barriers preventing marginalized groups from engaging in politics and to promote diversity, inclusion, and political representation.

Held at the Grand Pinnacle Hotel in Maiduguri, Borno State, the summit was facilitated by the EU-SDGN implementing partner, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).

In his welcome remarks, CISLAC Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Ibrahim, emphasized the summit’s objective. “Our focus is clear: to champion inclusivity within our political landscape, ensuring that every voice is heard and every individual has equal opportunities to lead,” he stated. Ibrahim further explained that by engaging party leaders and promoting inclusivity, CISLAC aims to contribute towards rebuilding and creating a brighter future for all. He outlined key goals of the summit: fostering representative leadership, promoting equal opportunities, and strengthening democratic institutions.

The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, represented by the Chairman of APGA in Borno State, Alhaji (Barr) Rufai Monguno, delivered a goodwill message. He assured that political parties under IPAC will review and deliberate on the summit’s resolutions to advance political inclusion in the state.

Ibrahim Muhammad Sa’ad, Executive Director of Focus on the Needy Care Foundation (FONEC), highlighted that political inclusion is not just a democratic ideal but a necessary step towards building an inclusive society. “This summit is a clarion call to political parties, stakeholders, and citizens alike to embrace the diversity within our communities—be it gender, age, ethnicity, or ability—and to create platforms where all can contribute to shaping our shared future,” he said.

The summit concluded with a call to action, urging political parties to prioritize inclusivity and diversity in their operations. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the EU-SDGN programme to promote a more inclusive and representative political landscape in Nigeria.
