EU programme champions media’s role in fact-checking for peaceful elections

A vital webinar on “Safeguarding Democracy: The Media and Role of Fact-Checking in Peaceful Elections” was hosted by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance Programme, in led by its cohort member, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA). This virtual event took place via Zoom on Wednesday, 17 April 2024, at 11:00 am, aiming to underscore the pivotal role of the media and fact-checking in ensuring the integrity of elections.

 

The session brought together journalists, fact-checkers, and media professionals to discuss strategies and tools essential for combating misinformation and promoting transparency during election cycles. The webinar emphasized the critical need for accurate reporting and fact-checking as foundational to safeguarding democratic processes.

 

Through interactive discussions and expert panels, participants explored how enhanced media scrutiny and the rigorous verification of facts could serve as deterrents against electoral fraud and manipulation.
