In an effort to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic processes, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) held its quarterly dialogue today with representatives of Ekiti State Government in Ado-Ekiti, focusing on promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in the state.
The event, which brought together various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political actors within the state, served as a platform to assess the progress of democratic reforms and build collaboration toward a more transparent governance structure.
Implemented by the Justice Development and Peace Initiative, the dialogue underscored the role of transparency and accountability in enhancing the credibility of elections and governance. It addressed critical issues such as electoral integrity, campaign finance, media ethics, and the inclusion of marginalized groups in political processes. The quarterly engagement is part of the broader EU-SDGN initiative, which aims to support Nigeria’s democratic institutions and build a more inclusive, participatory democracy.
Representative of the Justice Development and Peace Initiative, Ekiti state in his opening remarks, commended Ekiti state government’s commitment to democratic consolidation but stressed the need for sustained efforts in implementing electoral reforms and ensuring accountable governance. “Democracy is a journey, not a destination,” he said. “For Nigeria, this journey requires the commitment of all stakeholders to uphold the values of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.”
One of the key outcomes of the dialogue was the renewed commitment of stakeholders to push for electoral reforms that will curb the excesses in politics and enhance transparency in the electioneering process.
As part of its commitment, the EU-SDGN continues to provide technical and financial support to initiatives that promote transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s democratic processes. The dialogue series, which is held quarterly, serves as a platform for stakeholders to assess the state of democracy within the state, address challenges, and proffer solutions that will further entrench good governance and credible elections.
