EU-SDGN cohort successfully hosted the 2023 edition of the Model Legislative Assembly (MLA) session as part of its flagship Legislative Internship Programme (LIP) 2023. The event provided a platform for interns to hone their legislative skills, engage in policy debates, and experience the intricacies of the legislative process firsthand.

The LIP, an initiative by PLAC under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical legislative experience for young individuals interested in pursuing careers in public policy and lawmaking. The MLA session, a highlight of the program, brought together interns from diverse academic backgrounds for a dynamic and immersive legislative experience.

The simulated legislative assembly featured debates on mock bills and resolutions, providing interns with the opportunity to showcase their research, advocacy, and public speaking skills.

Participants of the MLA session expressed enthusiasm for the program. One intern stated that “the experience has been invaluable in understanding the complexities of policymaking and the legislative process. It’s a unique opportunity to engage with peers and mentors who share a passion for making a positive impact through effective legislation.”

The event not only allowed interns to engage in constructive debates but also provided a platform for networking and collaboration. The interactive nature of the MLA session encouraged participants to exchange ideas, build connections, and cultivate a deeper understanding of the legislative landscape.

Representative of the European Union emphasized the importance of empowering young leaders through experiential learning. “The Model Legislative Assembly session is a testament to our commitment to nurturing the next generation of policymakers. We hope to inspire them to pursue careers in public service and contribute to the development of robust and effective policies.”

The event serves as a stepping stone for aspiring lawmakers, offering them valuable insights and skills that will undoubtedly shape their future contributions to the field of public policy and governance.
