EU-SDGN Empowers INEC Officers to Champion Gender, Disability Inclusion in Elections

The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) has organised a three-day Inclusivity Desk Officers Training in the North-West to strengthen the capacity of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in promoting gender and disability inclusion at all stages of the electoral process.

The training, held from 22 to 24 September 2025 in Kano, familiarised INEC officers with the legal frameworks governing elections, clarified roles and responsibilities, and provided practical tools to integrate inclusivity into their work. In addition to grounding participants in both law and practice, the sessions also prepared officers for the active promotion of participation for all citizens.

On the second day, participants engaged in hands-on sessions exploring the electoral cycle, identifying barriers to participation, and learning strategies to tackle discrimination. The interactive approach allowed officers to share experiences, discuss challenges, and collectively develop solutions to strengthen inclusivity, ensuring that every voter, regardless of gender or disability, can exercise their democratic rights.

The final day focused on Monitoring & Evaluation, Inclusive Communication, Advocacy, and Media Engagement. Officers collaborated in group exercises, developed actionable strategies, and gained practical insights into making electoral processes more transparent, accessible, and citizen-focused. Certificates of participation were awarded in recognition of their dedication to building a more inclusive electoral environment.

By enhancing INEC’s capacity to deliver inclusive elections, EU-SDGN is empowering electoral officers, strengthening public trust, fostering greater citizen participation, and supporting a democracy where no one is left behind. This North-West training forms part of a nationwide initiative to embed inclusivity and professionalism within INEC, preparing the institution to manage credible, accessible, and inclusive elections across Nigeria.
