The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN), in partnership with the Justice, Development, and Peace Movement (JDPM), recently held a Quarterly Dialogue Meeting aimed at enhancing the capacity of community institutions for civic engagement in Oyo State. This initiative is part of EU-SDGN’s broader commitment to strengthening democratic governance and promoting active civic participation at the grassroots level across Nigeria.
The dialogue, which brought together key community leaders, local institutions, and civil society organisations, focused on building the capacity of community institutions to engage more effectively in the democratic process. Participants were trained on how to build active citizen participation, hold leaders accountable, and advocate for better governance in their communities. By equipping these institutions with tools for civic engagement, the program seeks to empower citizens to play a more active role in shaping policies that affect their lives.
JDPM, a key local partner in this initiative, worked closely with EU-SDGN to ensure that the dialogue addressed the specific needs of communities in Oyo State. Their collaboration underscored the importance of localised solutions to strengthen democratic processes and improve governance outcomes at the grassroots level.
The EU-SDGN through JDPM partnership has been instrumental in promoting inclusive governance and civic participation across Nigeria. By facilitating this Quarterly Dialogue Meeting, they continue to support the development of strong, active communities that are capable of driving meaningful change in the democratic landscape. This initiative represents a significant step toward building more resilient community institutions that can sustain long-term engagement in civic and political processes.
