EU-SDGN Holds Review for Anti-GBV Clubs in Oyo State

To address the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) among young people, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) and the Justice Development and Peace Movement (JDPM) organised a quarterly dialogue meeting in Oyo State. The event focused on reviewing the functionality and impact of Anti-Gender-Based Violence (Anti-GBV) Clubs established in secondary schools across the state.

The dialogue brought together key stakeholders, including educators, school administrators, students, and representatives from local civil society organisations, to evaluate the effectiveness of these clubs in raising awareness, providing support, and fostering safe spaces for students affected by GBV.

During the meeting, representative of JDPM highlighted the progress made so far, noting that the Anti-GBV clubs have been instrumental in empowering students to speak out against abuse, promote gender equality, and support victims of violence. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, societal stigma, and the need for continuous training were identified as areas needing improvement.

The meeting also featured presentations from students who are members of these clubs, sharing their experiences and successes in combating GBV in their schools. These testimonies underscored the necessity of sustaining and expanding the initiative to reach more schools.

In his closing remarks, the executive director of JDPM reiterated the commitment of both EU-SDGN and JDPM to enhancing the functionality of these clubs. “Our mission is to create a society where students are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to stand against any form of violence, ensuring that every child in Oyo State can learn in a safe and nurturing environment,” he said.

As part of the action points from the meeting, participants agreed on the need for stronger collaboration with school management, local authorities, and community leaders to ensure that the Anti-GBV clubs remain functional and impactful in the long term.
