The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Programme through its implementing partner, Kukah Centre, yesterday convened a high-level meeting with national leaders of political parties in Nigeria, aiming to address key challenges in party management and operations.
The meeting underscored the need for political parties to enhance their internal structures and improve governance, with a focus on promoting transparency and inclusiveness.
The event held in Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja, brought together party leaders to discuss critical thematic priorities for strengthening party systems. Key objectives of the meeting included exploring strategies for improving party management, securing commitments from party leaders on addressing specific needs, and commissioning technical working groups to coordinate the implementation of party-specific reforms.
Over 100 participants drawn from the National Chairmen and National Organising Secretaries (NWCs) of the 19 Political Parties, Inter–Party Advisory Council (IPAC), INEC, CSO Partners (NWTF/ElectHER, Yiaga Africa, TAF Africa, and CISLAC), the European Union Delegation (EUD), Media, Academia, and Legislature were on ground to initiate and coordinate the implementation of party specific priorities, towards strengthening their management and operations.
One of the outcomes of the event was a commitment by party leaders to establish periodic reviews of their performance, ensuring continuous learning and development in party management practices. These reviews will focus on both party-specific initiatives and the overall political party system in Nigeria.
The EU-SDGN initiative continues to emphasize the importance of engaging political leadership in building stronger party structures and promoting democratic governance in Nigeria. Through these high-level dialogues, the programme seeks to strengthen political party systems, ensuring that they are responsive, accountable, and inclusive.
