As part of its ongoing efforts to support civil society organisations under the EU-SDGN (European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria) programme, the EU recently facilitated a townhall meeting with key community stakeholders in Imo State. The meeting, held at Rento Hotel, Owerri, brought together leaders from Owerri North and Owerri West Local Government Areas to reflect on the outcomes of the 2023 General Elections, the off-cycle gubernatorial elections, and the recently concluded local government elections.

Attendees included traditional and religious leaders such as His Royal Highness Eze George Nwosu, Odum 1 of Egbelu Autonomous Community, Ngor Okpala LGA, Imo State, HRH Eze Innocent C. Opara, and Sheik Barr. Suleiman Yusuf, Chief Imam and Leader of the Muslim community in Imo State. In addition to these leaders, youth and women leaders, as well as representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), were present.

In his opening remarks, Mr. David Gabriel, Consortium Manager of SOS Children’s Village, emphasised the importance of the lessons drawn from the elections and the discussions at the townhall. “The insights gathered from today’s discussions are vital for shaping the future of Nigeria’s electoral processes. By reflecting on both successes and challenges, we can ensure that future elections are conducted in a manner that fosters sustainable peace and strengthens our democracy,” he stated.

HRH Eze George Nwosu called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take the outcomes of the meeting seriously. “I urge INEC to take the lessons from this townhall seriously. There is a need for decisive action to improve the conduct of elections in our country, ensuring that they are transparent, fair, and truly reflective of the people’s will,” he said.

The event is part of the EU-SDGN’s broader efforts to support the conduct of peaceful elections and enhance transparency in Nigeria’s democratic governance.
