EU-SDGN, JDPMC Osogbo, Holds Quarterly Dialogue on Implementation of Osun State PWD Law 2024

As part of the European Union’s Support to Democracy and Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) initiative, the Justice, Development, and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC) Osogbo hosted a quarterly dialogue meeting to facilitate the effective implementation of the Osun State Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Law 2024. This critical engagement brought together stakeholders, including representatives from PWD groups, government officials, civil society organisations, and legal experts, to discuss their roles in ensuring that the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities are upheld in the state.

The dialogue forms a key part of EU-SDGN’s broader mission to promote inclusive governance and the protection of marginalised groups across Nigeria. By fostering collaboration and facilitating discussions on the implementation of the new PWD law, JDPMC Osogbo aims to ensure that the provisions of the law translate into meaningful societal change, particularly in terms of accessibility, participation, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

The Osun State PWD Law 2024, a landmark piece of legislation, is designed to protect the rights of people with disabilities, ensure their access to essential services, and promote their full participation in public life.

Speaking at the event, JDPMC Program Coordinator emphasised the importance of collective action: “This law is a powerful tool for change, but it requires the active involvement of all stakeholders, from government bodies to advocacy groups, to bring its promises to life.”

Discussions during the meeting centred on the challenges faced in enforcing the law, the need for public awareness on disability rights, and the importance of creating accessible infrastructure. Stakeholders proposed key actions, including the establishment of monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, capacity building for enforcement agencies, and financial support for initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of PWDs.

JDPMC Osogbo, with the support of EU-SDGN, reiterated its commitment to advocating for the full realisation of the Osun State PWD Law 2024. By working closely with all parties, the EU-SDGN programme aims to ensure that persons with disabilities in Osun State experience the full benefits of this transformative legislation, contributing to a more inclusive and democratic society.

The quarterly dialogue concluded with a shared commitment to continue these engagements and take decisive steps towards fostering a more accessible and equitable environment for all citizens in Osun State.
