The European Union Support to Democratic Governance (EU-SDGN) Programme, led by its cohort member, SOS Villages, held two significant events aimed at fostering peace and resilience in Borno and Oyo states. These activities included a capacity-building workshop for NYSC members and a community town hall meeting, both designed to address critical issues of peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and climate resilience.
Activity 1: Capacity Building for NYSC Members
On June 11, 2024, at 9 am, capacity-building workshops were simultaneously conducted at Amadi International Hotel in Maiduguri, Borno State, and Damjay Hotel & Suites in Ikolaba, Agodi GRA, Ibadan, Oyo State. These workshops aimed to equip National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with the skills and knowledge to act as agents of peace and change in their respective communities.
The workshops featured expert facilitators who provided training on conflict resolution, peacebuilding techniques, and strategies for fostering community cohesion. Participants were also educated on the importance of youth engagement in promoting sustainable peace and development. By empowering these young leaders, the EU-SDGN Programme and SOS Villages aim to create a ripple effect of positive change throughout their communities.
Activity 2: Community Town Hall Meeting
On June 13, 2024, at 9 am, community town hall meetings were held at the same venues in Maiduguri and Ibadan. These meetings focused on discussing peacebuilding, conflict resolution, climate resilience, and indigenous strategies. The town halls brought together community leaders, local residents, civil society organisations, and experts to share insights and develop actionable plans for addressing local challenges.
Discussions at the town hall meetings highlighted the interconnectedness of conflict and climate change, emphasising the need for comprehensive strategies that incorporate indigenous knowledge and practices. Participants shared their experiences and proposed solutions tailored to the unique contexts of Borno and Oyo states.
