EU-SDGN Strengthens Media Coverage for Edo Governorship Election

In preparation for the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN), in partnership with the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), successfully enhanced the capacity of media professionals to deliver high-quality civic and voter education.

We hosted a one-day media engagement in Edo State, bringing together journalists from various radio and TV stations. These journalists, who are tasked with covering the Edo Governorship Election, were equipped with the tools to promote fair, balanced, and inclusive reporting throughout the electoral process.

The engagement provided participants with training on effective methods of voter education, enabling them to package and broadcast informative and compliant programs. The training also addressed common pitfalls in election coverage, helping ensure that the media delivered accurate and ethical reports to the public.

Dr. Akin Akingbulu, Executive Director of CEMESO, highlighted the media’s pivotal role in elections. “The media serves as a vital bridge between citizens and the electoral process, offering a platform for public dialogue and ensuring transparency and accountability,” Dr. Akingbulu said. “By empowering media professionals, we have ensured that election coverage is accurate, ethical, and inclusive.”

This initiative, supported and funded by the European Union, reflects the EU’s ongoing commitment to promoting democratic values and media integrity in Nigeria. Through this collaboration, CEMESO has contributed to fostering a more informed and engaged electorate, helping ensure a more transparent and accountable election process in Edo State.
