The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Programme, implemented by the EU-SDGN cohort member, Justice Development and Peace Initiative, successfully conducted a school outreach event focused on civic education and gender-based violence. The event took place on Wednesday, 3rd July 2024, at Obalatan Community Grammar School, Ilupeju Ekiti, beginning at 12 noon.
This outreach activity, part of Component 6b of the EU-SDGN Programme, aimed to educate students on their civic duties and raise awareness about gender-based violence. The programme sought to empower young people with the knowledge and skills needed to actively participate in democratic processes and advocate for gender equality.
During the event, students engaged in interactive sessions covering the principles of civic education, the importance of participating in democratic processes, and the detrimental effects of gender-based violence. The outreach also provided practical advice on how to identify, prevent, and respond to instances of gender-based violence within their communities.
The initiative is part of the broader efforts by the EU-SDGN Programme to rebuild trust in Nigeria’s electoral process and institutions while addressing crucial social issues. By targeting young people and educational institutions, the programme aims to foster a generation of informed, active citizens who are equipped to contribute to democratic governance and social justice.
