Ahead of the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria programme led a resonating voter education campaign Anambra State under the banner of Able2Vote promote inclusivity. The campaign was designed to empower persons with disabilities with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to actively participate in the governorship election.
The campaign toured all the three senatorial districts beginning with Nnewi and Onitsha on May 20, and Awka on May 21, bringing together persons with disabilities, election officials, and civil society advocates in open and interactive forums.
In Onitsha alone, over 100 participants gathered to engage in critical conversations about access, safety, and representation at the polls. Their questions were direct: Will polling units be safe? Are assistive tools really going to be available? Can persons with disabilities serve as ad hoc staff?
The representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at event satisfactorily addressed all concerns raised by participants. Participants were also given live demonstrations of assistive tools that will be available at polling stations, turning the abstract idea of accessibility into a tangible reality.
But beyond the answers, what stood out was the energy in the room. Participants were eager to learn, and be heard. The message was loud and unified: “We will show up. We will speak out. And we will vote.”
To extend the campaign’s impact, a live radio session was held on Anambra Broadcasting Service, offering even more people the chance to engage with the message of electoral inclusion. The conversation moved from the streets to the airwaves, reaching homes, communities, and decision-makers alike. The session featured Jake Epelle, the Chief Executive Officer of TAF Africa; Tarfa Tyokase, Senior M&E Officer of TAF Africa; and George Anwayi, Senior Programme Officer, who shared insights on the importance of inclusive democratic participation.
Through the Able2Vote campaign, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria programme is helping to build a democracy that works for all. These voter education efforts are more than civic engagement—they are a declaration that no citizen should be left behind, and that every vote must count.
