The European Union Support to Democratic Governance (EU-SDGN) Programme, in collaboration with the International Press Centre (IPC), held a pivotal event aimed at fostering dialogue and rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s electoral process. The Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Rebuilding Trust in the Electoral Process, Institutions, and Elections brought together key figures from various sectors to address the pressing challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic framework.

The event, which took place on Thursday, May 23, 2024, served as a critical platform for stakeholders to discuss and devise strategies to enhance the credibility and transparency of elections in Nigeria. Attendees included representatives from government agencies, civil society organisations, media houses, political parties, and international bodies, reflecting the diverse interests invested in Nigeria’s democratic integrity.

Keynote speakers emphasised the importance of restoring public confidence in the electoral system, which is fundamental to the legitimacy of any democratic government. Discussions centred on recent electoral experiences, identified gaps, and proposed reforms to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

The IPC, a cohort member of the EU-SDGN Programme, highlighted the pivotal role of the media in educating the electorate and holding institutions accountable. The dialogue underscored the need for responsible journalism and accurate reporting to combat misinformation and promote informed voter participation.

Participants also explored the role of technology in modernising the electoral process, enhancing voter registration, and ensuring the integrity of vote counting. Recommendations from the dialogue will inform future initiatives and policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework.

The EU-SDGN Programme, through such engagements, continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting democratic governance in Nigeria. This multi-stakeholder dialogue represents a significant step towards rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s electoral process, ensuring that elections are not only free and fair but also perceived as such by the electorate.
