EUSDGN Programme Tackles Misinformation and Disinformation in Nigeria’s Elections

The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN) Programme, through its implementing partners, the International Press Centre (IPC) and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), recently concluded a two-day virtual event focused on strengthening media coverage of Nigeria’s electoral process.

The event aimed to address the growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation during elections. Media professionals from broadcast, print, and online platforms were urged to provide accurate, professional reporting to safeguard the integrity of information during the 2023 electoral process.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, the Executive Director of IPC said “the initiatives provide a platform for diverse stakeholders including journalists, election officials, and civil society representatives to collaboratively address emerging issues such as misinformation, voter suppression, and evolving electoral laws which in turn foster greater understanding and promote best practices”

Overall, the discussions centred on the media’s role in promoting voter education and ensuring the public receives credible information. Participants of the event examined how misinformation and disinformation affected the 2023 elections and explored strategies to combat these issues going forward.

The event is part of the EU-SDGN Program strategy and support to inform new collaborative strategies and enhance the effectiveness of media coverage ahead of future elections. The event highlights the European Union’s continued commitment to supporting democratic governance and strengthening media accountability in Nigeria.
