The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN) Programme, implemented by the EU-SDGN cohort members, JDPM Oyo, recently hosted a significant community outreach event aimed at addressing gender-based violence in Oyo State. The event, titled “Community Outreach: Town Hall Meeting on Tackling Gender-Based Violence in Oyo State,” took place on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 10 am at Baba Aso Multipurpose Hall, Iberekodo, Igbole Igboora.

The town hall meeting brought together community leaders, civil society organisations, local government officials, and residents to discuss the pressing issue of gender-based violence and explore practical solutions to combat it. The event highlighted the EU’s ongoing commitment to promoting human rights and gender equality within Nigerian communities.

Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence in Oyo State. The meeting provided a platform for survivors to share their experiences and for stakeholders to propose actionable strategies for prevention, support, and advocacy. Key topics included legal frameworks, community support systems, and the role of education in changing societal attitudes towards gender-based violence.

JDPM Oyo, a key member of the EU-SDGN cohort, played a crucial role in organising and facilitating the town hall meeting. Their dedication to addressing gender-based violence and promoting gender equality was evident throughout the event.

The community outreach initiative is part of the broader efforts by the EU-SDGN Programme to rebuild trust in Nigeria’s electoral process and institutions while also addressing critical social issues. By empowering communities and fostering open dialogue, the programme aims to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all residents.
