The European Union has once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering young talent and promoting good governance in Nigeria with the commencement of its annual 10-week long full-time legislative internship programme. The programme was inaugurated with an orientation workshop aimed at equipping interns with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the legislative process effectively.

Under this initiative, the European Union’s Support to Democratic Governance Programme, EU-SDGN’s cohort led by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre selects one young Nigerian from each of the country’s states and the Federal Capital Territory. These carefully chosen interns are granted a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the inner workings of Nigeria’s legislative process, gaining practical experience and a deeper understanding of governance.

The programme, which has gained recognition for its contribution to capacity-building and youth empowerment, aims to nurture the next generation of leaders who will play pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s future. By offering hands-on experience within the legislative sphere, the European Union seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical governance.

The 10-week long internship covers a wide range of topics, including legislative procedures, policy analysis, research methodologies, and engagement with lawmakers. Interns are exposed to the daily routines of legislators, participating in discussions, debates, and committee sessions. This immersive experience enables them to grasp the intricacies of lawmaking, public policy formulation, and the democratic process.

The European Union’s commitment to this initiative underscores its dedication to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria. It serves as a testament to the organisation’s belief in the power of young minds to drive positive change.

Over the years, the legislative internship programme has produced a cohort of talented individuals who have gone on to make significant contributions to various sectors of Nigerian society. Their experiences in the halls of government have equipped them with the tools needed to address pressing challenges and advocate for positive reforms.

As the programme kicks off for another year, the European Union remains steadfast in its support of Nigeria’s youth and its dedication to nurturing a new generation of leaders who will steer the country towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
