In an effort to foster civic education and combat gender-based violence, the European Union-Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) cohort organized a “School Outreach” program in Ifeoluwa Co-educational Grammar School, Oke-Ayepe, Osogbo, Osun State Osun.

The event brought together educators to address pressing issues concerning civic engagement and gender equality among young students. With a focus on empowering young people, the outreach aimed to instill a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities while raising awareness about the prevalence and detrimental effects of gender-based violence.
The EU-SDGN cohort, committed to driving positive change, spearheaded discussions and interactive sessions within the school. Students were encouraged to actively participate, fostering a sense of ownership in shaping their communities and advocating for gender equality.

Addressing the students, a member of the EU-SDGN cohort, emphasized the importance of inclusive education and gender-sensitive policies. “Empowering our students with the knowledge and tools to champion social justice and gender equality is crucial for building a more equitable society.”

Throughout the outreach program, students engaged in thought-provoking activities, including workshops, and open forums. These activities facilitated meaningful dialogue on challenging topics such as consent, stereotypes, and the importance of respect and empathy.

Furthermore, the event served as a platform to introduce strategies for reporting and addressing instances of gender-based violence. Local resources and support networks were highlighted, providing students with avenues to seek assistance and advocate for change within their communities.

The “School Outreach on Civic Education and Gender-Based Violence” represents a significant step forward in promoting awareness and fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect within Osun State. Through collaborative efforts and ongoing initiatives, the EU-SDGN cohort remains dedicated to creating a brighter, more equitable future for all.
